How did Allergy Train come about?
The idea for Allergy Train developed over a couple of years, as myself and several family members became aware of intolerances to gluten, and a range of food groups including salicylates, dairy and food additives. Problems with excess fructose consumption also affected family members.
The more family members and friends who began to discover issues with food, the more we became aware of the amount of time, money and effort that we all spent trying to hunt down suitable, nutritious and tasty foods. Travelling to different health food shops, reading labels, learning new recipes, and cooking many more foods from scratch was draining and at times overwhelming, but essential to our health.
On top of this, our two children have both had multiple food protein and chemical sensitivities requiring strict diet control since birth. Ensuring our children are eating a range of nutritious foods and growing and developing normally despite food intolerances is an on-going challenge. Managing their symptoms when their tolerance levels are surpassed is also challenging. Fussy eating and behavioural issues in the older child and unsettledness, colic and reflux in the younger child are amongst the symptoms we live with when their diet is not well controlled.
We found that whilst there is some assistance and a growing food market for people with allergies, the supply of foods for people with food additive or natural food chemical intolerances such as salicylates, amines and glutamates was severely limited to speciality suppliers who only offer the products in a few health shops and online.
Being a dietitian consulting in the area of food allergies and intolerances, I was well aware that we were not alone in our desire for a simpler way of accessing foods without needing to make everything from scratch. Many of my clients also wanted to know what foods would fulfil their nutritional needs and still be enjoyable. Others wanted to be able to provide treats for their children for special occasions, so that they would not feel left out. These needs are what led me to develop Allergy Train. Allergy Train is here to help you achieve health, nutrition and eating enjoyment, without the hassle and cost usually associated with a special diet.
I am an Accredited Practising Dietitian, with a Masters Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics as well as a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement). My experience in dietetics includes, community and public health nutrition as well as private consulting in allergies and intolerances. Thus, I am well qualified to bring you good quality, nutritious food products that meet your individual needs.
My passion to help improve people’s nutrition and wellbeing has been demonstrated through several awards I have received:
Highly Commended by the Health Minister for Individual Excellence in Public Healthcare in 2005 for my development of Community Kitchens in Australia.
National Heart Foundation National Award for Best Healthy Eating Project in 2005.
National Heart Foundation Award for Best Australian Project in Local Government for my facilitation of the development of a one stop shop for community food distribution in the City of Greater Dandenong in 2009.
